Who We Are

Since 2000, Development Gateway: An IREX Venture (DG) has built tools, systems, and dashboards that make development data easier to gather, use, and understand.

• DG began as an idea within the World Bank to answer the question: How can we leverage the power of the internet to understand who is doing what, where, and to what effect?
• With a focus early on creating global goods, DG aimed to make development information publicly available at a time when it was held privately or difficult to access.
• Eventually, this work transitioned from building IT platforms to working more directly with government institutions in order to create sustainable change, and began to more effectively engage with these stakeholders.
• As the world became increasingly online, DG was one of the first technology-for-development organizations to think deeply about data and technology uptake, leveraging our learnings and deep trust gained by working with countries to translate our work on data use for broader policy messaging.
• Today, DG recognizes that global shifts underscore the need for strategic systems transformation and is working with countries to create a path toward a more resilient digital future with sustainable and interoperable systems. This expands on our 25+ year ethos of designing and building with empowered partners who have ownership of the end result.

For the last twenty-five years, DG has navigated multiple technology trends and development funding disruptions. Throughout this evolution, our technology expertise has deepened while our ability to deliver large-scale change has accelerated through our partnerships.
